NJ City coach retires!
ERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey City University basketball coach Charles Brown announced his retirement Tuesday, ending a 25-year tenure in which his teams won nearly 500 games and twice reached the NCAA Division III national semifinals.
Brown's teams won five New Jersey Athletic Conference championships, and he never had a losing season as a coach. He ends his career with a 483-218 overall record, making him the winningest basketball coach in NJAC history. ADVERTISEMENT
"I just felt it was time," Brown said of his retirement, which takes effect Sept. 30. "I feel comfortable with the program and I feel I have done as much as I can do with it. I'm satisfied. I am honored to have had the opportunity to coach here for 25 years."
Brown -- who received his undergraduate and master's degrees from New Jersey City -- guided 12 teams to the NCAA Division III tournament. The Gothic Knights reached the national semifinals in 1986 and 1992, losing each time to the eventual national champions, and Brown was named the Kodak Division III national coach of the year in 1986.
Brown was an All-Hudson County player at Jersey City's Lincoln High School, where he graduated in 1960. He went on to star for NJCU teams that won back-to-back NJAC titles in 1964 and '65.
Brown began his coaching career at his high school alma mater, where his teams won three Hudson County championships.
