Hundreds Without Power as Heat Wave Continues

By Sewell Chan

Updated, 11:50 a.m. | As of 11:20 a.m., 856 customers were still without power, according to Bob McGee, a Con Edison spokesman. There were 340 customers without power in the Bronx, 321 in Brooklyn, 84 on Staten Island, 82 in Queens and 29 in Westchester County.

Con Edison continued to ask customers in an area of southern Brooklyn that was without power for much of Monday to conserve energy. The area — which includes the neighborhoods of Gravesend, Ocean Parkway, and parts of Bensonhurst — is bounded by the Long Island Railroad on the north, Shore Parkway and Gravesend Neck Road on the south, East 19th and 20th Avenues on the east, and East 15th and 16th Streets on the west.

Updated, 10:42 a.m. | As an unusual spring heat wave continued to exert its grip over the New York region, hundreds of Consolidated Edison customers were without power this morning as sporadic but irritating power outages continued to tax the utility. As of 10 a.m., 616 customers were without power in the Bronx, 513 in Brooklyn, 142 in Queens, 58 on Staten Island and 35 in Westchester County, according to Alfonso Quiroz, a Con Edison spokesman.

A small fire that between Christopher and Ninth Streets on the PATH commuter railroad led the Port Authority Bus Terminal to halt service at 9:52 a.m. from Jersey City and Hoboken in New Jersey to 33rd Street in Manhattan, according to Steve Coleman, a Port Authority spokesman. Service from New Jersey to Lower Manhattan remains in effect.
